How Does Hair Transplantation Work? Dr. Shikha Chandaliya December 21, 2020 Health & Beauty 2002 Receding hairlines has been a major problem in the modern world. With the air and water quality degrading worldwide, increasing hair problems have been reported. There is no greater sadness than watching your hairline retreat year after year. Looking into the mirror can be a depressing affair if you ever have to face balding in your life. Consider yourself extremely lucky if you are sporting a head full of thick, silky hair; not everyone has that kind of luxury. With an increase in balding cases, the number of procedures to overcome it has also increased tenfold. It is now fairly common and easy to undergo transplants to cover that bald spot on your head. There’s a personalized surgery for every level of baldness. Technology has advanced so much that it is impossible to differentiate natural hair from implants. After all, even the transplanted hair has the ability to rejuvenate and grow naturally. If you’re considering a hair transplant, you won’t regret it. The confidence a head full of hair gives a person is well-worth undergoing the process. Reasons To Get A Hair-Transplant Who doesn’t want to look nice, sharp, and whole? There are infinite reasons to get a hair transplant, but getting back the feeling of being young tops it all. 1. Gain Self-Esteem Hair loss can hurt your self-confidence drastically. You start feeling low and disappointed when balding. Gaining your hair back surely returns your self-esteem to a great extent. You feel younger and bolder, and the feeling of being incomplete starts to fade away. The confidence and self-worth follow suit once you believe you’re whole again. 2. Visible Results As soon as you get your transplant done, you start seeing the results in just a few weeks. Unlike hair products, the results of hair transplants are eminent and long-lasting. The striking changes in your appearance are clear and noticeable. Within a few months, it’s hard to tell if you ever had hair fall problems to begin with. Looking in the mirror is fun once more! 3. Natural Hair The best thing about hair transplants is that the surgically grafted hair is real — taken from your own body and replaced in the balding region. The newly grafted hair follicles strengthen their roots in your scalp and grows long naturally. You don’t need to worry about it looking fake or unnatural. The procedure of hair transplant involves redefining your hairline pattern, and it starts looking the way it looked before the hair loss. Oftentimes it can look stronger, thicker, and better. 4. No side-effects Unlike injections and supplements for rejuvenating hair, hair transplant doesn’t involve taking heavy doses of medicine. Hair loss products and supplements can cause serious damage to the human body and can even lead to terminal illnesses like cancer. Whereas, the method of transplanting hair has very few side-effects; it is highly fruitful and doesn’t detriment your health one bit. Even in the highly unlikely scenario of a person experiencing side-effects due to hair-transplant, it is not catastrophic and can be managed with ease. Understanding Types Of Hair Transplant Procedures Generally, there are two broad categories for hair restoration, surgical and non-surgical. Surgical processes are further subdivided into Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI). While Laser Hair Therapy, Mesohair Therapy, and Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy fall under Non-surgical hair restoration therapies. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) The FUT method involves a surgeon removing a strip of skin from the donor area (generally from the side or back of the head). The skin is then processed to remove individual grafts of hair which are then carefully transplanted onto the recipient area. FUT is the oldest method in the history of hair transplantation. Compared to other modern techniques, this method has several disadvantages in terms of scarring and growth rate and requires a seasoned surgeon to perform it. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) FUE is the most preferred method for hair transplantation because it doesn’t require cutting or sewing of the skin, provides a larger pool of donor follicles, and the scars are much smaller and less noticeable. In this procedure, the surgeon extracts individual follicular units one by one and then transplants them to the recipient region. However, this can be time-consuming and might require multiple sessions to finish. Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) DHI can be understood as a modified version of the FUE method. It is carried out with a pen-shaped surgical tool that is capable of both extracting and transplanting hair follicles. While in the FUE method the surgeon needs to cut channels before doing the implantation process, in the DHI process, the surgeon can attempt both removal and insertion at the same time. The FUT, FUE, and DHI hair transplant methods are far more rewarding than the various therapies available for hair restoration. Surgical methods can be time-consuming, but the results they provide are much greater than non-surgical hair restoration. Although, people who are unwilling to undergo surgery can definitely opt for non-surgical treatments like Laser, Mesohair, and PRP therapies which have many benefits of their own. Non-Surgical Therapies Laser therapy operates on the principle of photo-bio stimulation, which helps repair damaged hair cells. Mesohair therapy generally involves treating hair with the necessary vitamins and minerals required to replenish the core. It controls hair fall, stimulates growth, and revives hair follicles. Plasma-Rich Platelet therapy involves blood collection, which is then used to extract growth factors. The platelets are then injected into the recipient which helps in faster healing of hair and skin tissues. Hair restoration can be achieved through several mediums.
