Often people take dental problems for granted which in long run only worsen the condition of their tooth and gums. Are you one of them? If yes, then you need to make few changes in your daily routine and incorporate some good habits in order to prevent cavities, bleeding gums, decaying of your tooth enamels and such other dental problems. And it’s not that difficult. Just follow this list of Do’s and Don’ts of dental hygiene.

Do’s

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. It helps remove plaque that can cause gum disease and tooth decay while also strengthening tooth enamel.
  2. Floss at least once a day for a proper inter-dental cleaning. It removes plaque and food that remain stuck between the teeth. It’s better if you floss before brushing so that toothpaste has better access between teeth.
  3. Rinse and gargle with the mouthwash, ideally right before bedtime. Mouthwash along with freshening up the breath also complements effective action of the toothpaste.
  4. Visit your family dental clinic regularly for check-ups as this will help to detect cavities and other oral issues in their early stages.
  5. Replace your old toothbrush after every three months. As in studies it has been found that toothbrushes may harbor microorganisms that could cause oral and/or systemic infection.
  6. We should brush our teeth after every meal but practically that is not possible. So, make it a habit to rinse your mouth immediately with water after having any meal or snack. Sometimes that’s not possible if you are in restaurant or a public place then at least drink little water to prevent the formation of plaques.

Don’ts

  1. Brush too hard. You are not going to achieve anything with a vigorous brushing rather it can wear down the enamel on the teeth as well as damage and push back the gums, exposing the sensitive root area.
  2. Snack often throughout the day! Especially, junk foods and sweets.
  3. Fear the dentist. If you avoid the dentist now you have to pay it later.
  4. Drink too much tea, coffee, aerated drinks.

Following these tips will guard against many dental problems providing maintenance and preventing early decay of tooth.
