If you are trying to lose weight then you are among half of all Americans who are also trying to do so. 

There is a lot of weight-loss advice available these days, and people have different strategies to try and shed those pounds. But one of the things that most people trying to lose weight have in common is that they all weigh themselves to check on their progress. 

However, getting on those scales too often won’t help your weight loss. In fact, it can set you back.

1. Scales Are Not Always Accurate

Are you sometimes shocked by what the bathroom scales tell you? Well, that could be because not all scales are accurate. 

Usually, the more you pay for something the better it is, so if you opted for some budget scales it could be that they are a bit sub-par.

Scales can also give inaccurate results if they are not on a completely flat surface. So while you may think your floor is level, even a tiny amount of unevenness can skew your results. 

2. It’s Not Always the Best Time to Weigh Yourself

Another factor that affects the results of your weigh-in, is when you choose to weigh yourself.

You may not be aware of this, but your weight fluctuates throughout the day and over the course of the week.

Various factors cause weight fluctuations, but the main one is water retention. Eating salty, sugary foods cause your body to retain much more water. So while you may not have put on any extra fat, if you are retaining a lot of water after a salty meal, it will show up on the scales. 

Women’s bodies also retain more water at various stages of the menstrual cycle, so that could also affect your weight.

3. Scales Don’t Tell the Whole Story

For most people, the reason for wanting to lose a bit of weight is to look slimmer and healthier. But your weight doesn’t always relate to your size. 

Muscle is much denser than fat. So if you have replaced the same amount of fat with muscle, your weight may not have altered much. However, the muscle is less bulky, more toned and looks healthier.

4. Don’t Be a Slave to the Scales

If you are trying to lose weight you can become a slave to your scales. You are dying to find out if you lost another pound, so you have to keep checking by jumping on the scales. 

This isn’t a very healthy approach to weight loss. As we’ve already discussed, the scales don’t tell the whole story.

If you weigh yourself and you don’t like what the scales tell you it can be demotivating. This can cause a slump in your morale and undermine all the healthy eating and exercise you have been doing. 

5. Weight Isn’t Everything

Trying to lose weight can be a challenge. It requires motivation and determination, but it is also important to remember that weight isn’t everything.

In order to stay healthy, you have to adopt a lifestyle that you can keep up all year round. Which means healthy eating and taking regular exercise. If you do these things in a way that you enjoy you will be much more likely to keep it up.

Sometimes the scales won’t tell you what you want to hear, but that’s ok. Your health and fitness are what count.
