How Schools Can Create Safer Environments for Students Who Have Experienced Sexual Abuse Dhanashree Kankanwade May 12, 2023 Lifestyle, Social World 249 Sexual abuse is an issue that doesn’t discriminate. Where there are people, there will likely be cases of sexual assualt. Predictably, this happens in schools and can negatively affect the students involved. Sexual abuse in schools can be perpetrated by peers, a teacher, or a stranger, which is why schools are responsible for creating a safe environment for their students, including those who have experienced sexual abuse. This article looks at the different steps a school can take to help create an environment that’s proactive in preventing sexual abuse and caring for those who might experience it. Part 1: Creating a Culture of Safety The first step in creating a safer environment for students who have experienced sexual abuse is to create a safety culture within the school. So, how would a school go about doing this? Establish policy- The first step is to have clear policies and procedures for reporting incidences of sexual abuse and to ensure that they are taken seriously. This should be reflected in the follow-up actions, with training to aid the school’s staff in responding to reports. Training- It’s important to train staff to spot signs of abuse, including changes in behavior, evidence of physical harm, and more. They also get training in empathy and supporting students who’ve experienced abuse. Open communication- Open communication helps students report when something happens to them and talk about their experience as survivors with ease, which helps with healing Support services- Besides everything, a school needs counseling services or referrals to external support organizations best prepared to help the students. Part 2: Accounting For Gaps In Setting It is well known that sexual abuse in private schools is more prevalent than in public ones. In situations like that, the school has to look to practices or conditions in public schools that make it impossible for predators to be with students away from the public eye. For instance, a school may institute restricted access to areas that may be isolated and away from others to ensure that wherever students are, at any time, they are visible to others, or at the very least, staff or physical security apparatus like cameras. That is not to say sexual assault in public schools is not a problem. It can and does happen everywhere, just at different rates. That is why schools must design around filling those gaps to avoid creating opportunities for predatory individuals. Part 2: Educating Students About Sexual Abuse Another important strategy is to educate students about sexual abuse. Schools can provide age-appropriate education to students about what sexual abuse is, what to do if they or someone they know is being abused, and how to report abuse. By educating students about these issues, schools can help prevent future incidents of abuse and support those who have already been victimized. Part 3: Providing Support to Survivors For students who have experienced sexual abuse, it’s important to provide support and resources to help them heal. Schools can offer counseling services, support groups, and other resources to help survivors cope with the trauma of their experiences. It’s also important for schools to have a protocol in place for reporting abuse and to ensure that survivors are protected from further harm. Part 4: Creating a Safe Physical Environment In addition to creating a safety culture and supporting survivors, schools can also take steps to create a safe physical environment. Some of the steps to take include: Creating safe spaces for students who have dealt with sexual abuse. This private space can be reserved for students to share their experiences without being judged. Improving general physical security with cameras, security personnel, and access restrictions to certain areas that may be used to perpetrate sexual abuse away from the public eye. Bullying prevention can also help ensure that students feel safe and accepted, especially when they are survivors of sexual assault. Staff should be trained to spot and handle bullying with care to avoid escalation. The provision of escorted transportation, for instance, to external counseling services or to and from school where needed. This can help shield the student when they need to keep going to school but also need some time away from the public eye. Part 5: Partnering with Parents and Community Organizations Finally, schools can partner with parents and community organizations to create a safer environment for students who have experienced sexual abuse. This may involve collaborating with local law enforcement, non-profit organizations, or mental health professionals to provide support and resources to students in need. We have to remember that secrecy hurts victims of sexual abuse, and cooperation across the board is the best chance we have of keeping students safe. Schools Have a Responsibility To Protect Student Survivors of Sexual Abuse Sexual abuse is a serious issue that affects many students. However, schools can play an important role in creating a safer environment for these students. By creating a culture of safety, educating students about sexual abuse, providing support to survivors, creating a safe physical environment, and partnering with parents and community organizations, schools can help prevent future incidents of abuse and provide the support that survivors need to heal.
